The title of Shakira's breakthrough 1996 album translates to "naked feet," which somehow captures the combination of playfulness and earnestness that marks the music. Recorded when she was 18, Pies Descalzos finds the Colombian singer-songwriter striving to find her own style. The disc moves through dance pop and dance-hall-lite before landing on a convincing-enough guitar-rock amalgam. It's a likable record, but Shakira seemed to acknowledge its weaknesses when she chose only one of its songs for inclusion on the later (and much superior) MTV Unplugged. --Rickey Wright (Amazon.com)

Rock-pop dance queen Shakira from Colombia is back with a sophomore album that pretty much mines the same field as her debut, with predictably similar sounds. "Ciega, Sordamuda" has the same urgent dance beat reminiscent of "Estoy Aquí," the monster club hit from her debut, Pies Descalzos. The singer/songwriter, whose whispery, quavering vocals sound like a cross between Alanis Morrisette and Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, wrote or cowrote all 11 tracks. Surprisingly, considering that noted producer ace Emilio Estefan is at the helm here, there is very little variance here from her debut. The tunes are mostly either rock-edged dance numbers or reflective melancholy ballads; the best include the echoey "Tú" and the meandering "Sombra de Ti." --Ramiro Burr (Amazon.com)
SHAKIRA-MTV UNPLUGGED
Recorded on August 12, 1999 in Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom in New York. Shakira was asked by MTV to do an acoustic concert. The positive reaction to the unplugged concert in Latin America and the United States made MTV and Sony decide to turn it into a record for international distribution.

Amazon.com: The 23-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira has become an international star thanks to her rich, emotive voice and thoughtful songs. Her albums Pies Descalzos and Dónde Están Los Ladrones? are platinum in the U.S.; now, as something of a taster before the release of an English-language disc, comes this recording of an acoustic performance for MTV. Shakira's songs translate well to the format; in some ways Unplugged is her most muscular music yet. The opening "Octava Dia" gains punch from its dramatic arrangement, while the elements of traditional music in "Ciega, Sordomuda" are applied with wit and charm. Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette who haven't caught on to Shakira yet are in for a pleasant surprise when they hear this. --Rickey Wright

SHAKIRA-LIVE AND OFF THE RECORD
As we are still waiting for the official follow-up to her last album Laundry Service, which she released three years ago, Shakira keeps us satisfied with a live-album. This CD/DVD package does not contain new studio material, although it does include a previously unreleased track, the AC/DC cover "Back In Black". The CD/DVD was filmed during the Tour Of The Mongoose, at the Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. However, there are parts on the DVD filmed in other countries
The real treat is the documentary and absolutely worth seeing. We follow Shakira during the world-wide Tour Of The Mongoose and we get to see her backstage, in pain, hanging with her band and a
.hits. Now comes Live & Off the Record, a lush CD/DVD package chronicling Shakira's 2003 Tour of the Mongoose. It's a must-have for Shakira fans and features her second live CD effort (following 2000's stellar MTV Unplugged). The real treat, though, is the DVD, which was filmed at a tour stop in the Netherlands. Shakira tears through tracks such as "Si Te Vas," "Inevitable," "Rules," and "Ready For the Good Times" with equal parts sensuality and animalistic ferocity. Her stage presence is positively electric. The accompanying documentary is also a revelation, capturing Shakira at her most honest and vulnerable. Highlights include the singer's bout with tendonitis (brought on by belly-dancing), an early-morning mariachi serenade from her boyfriend on Valentine's Day, and a backstage visit from novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Fans' appetites should be whetted--for a little while. --

In a way, it's almost a shame that Shakira is so gorgeous and her dance moves so mesmerizing, because it's easy to overlook the power of her unique voice.
Fortunately, the release of "Fijacion Oral Vol. 1" - the first half of her new two-album project - gives the listener a chance to hear Shakira showing off her best asset. (An English-language second volume is set for release in the fall.)
The melancholy yodel of this Colombian voice is expertly used throughout her 10-song collection, such as on the mellow opening "En Tus Pupilas." The breakout single, "La Tortura," is a sexy duet with Spanish star Alejandro Sanz that has an infectious accordion line woven into the chorus and Sanz playing the tres, a Cuban string instrument. (The accompanying video leaves one wondering just how Shakira manages to move like that.)
